According to reports, an air raid alarm was declared in Odessa at approximately 20:15 local time, followed by a powerful explosion moments later. The Ukrainian Air Force Command confirmed that the explosion had been caused by a ballistic missile strike.
The MJ Pinar, a bulk carrier ship registered under the Barbadian flag, had 12 crew members on board and was loading 30,000 tonnes of wheat for export when the attack occurred.
The Ukraine Sea Ports Authority reported that the missile struck a corner of the berth wall. The strike also triggered a fire on board the vessel, which resulted in the deaths of three Syrian and one Ukrainian crew member, while one sailor sustained injuries. A port employee who was also on the vessel was injured in the incident.
The missile strike also caused extensive damage to port infrastructure, including the pier and the terminal's grain gallery. Emergency services are currently on site assessing the damage and ensuring safety measures.
